·        In the 5th century Germanic invaders overran over half of the roman empire
o   Merchants faced land and sea invasions

·        Germanic invaders did not know how to read or write
o   Lots of oral tradition
o   Rich in songs and legends
·        German peoples language mixed with the roman and nobody could understand each other

·        More family ties and personal loyalty
